When selecting a many parents are not really sure what to look for in a program. Often, a child is already in daycare and the center offers a program that parents just assume will work for their child. As every child is different it may be an important step to evaluate what type of activities are offered at a daycare center and check to see what types of activities are offered through other programs.

Preschool activities may just look like play, but many are designed to actually help children understand specific concepts. A good program will offer its students a variety of centers that have different activities. Many of these activities are centered on hands on learning. For age children this is one of the best ways that they learn, being able to touch and feel things helps them learn.
Teachers who make lesson plans understand that for this age group seeing and doing is how children learn. activities will be created by having many centers in order to offer children different settings. One center may be a coloring center where there are markers, crayons, paints and even finger paints. Children work with all of these materials and learn about textures and colors.

This area should have a comfortable feel about it and have pillows or other small chairs for the children to sit and read in.
Another center may have beans and different types of scoops and spoons to move the beans from place to place. Or another very popular center will have sand and water. Children not only enjoy playing in these types of centers but they are learning about cause and effect, if you put too many beans in a container it will dump out. If you mix sand and water it becomes sticky and hard. These may seem like simplistic concepts but they are the beginning foundation of learning.
Other types of activities that work well with this age group include group time that has music or physical motion. children love music and instruments and this can be one of their most favorite times during the day.
A good should have a well planned out day that can help prepare a child for school. Most preschools allow parents to come and visit so that they can get an idea of what a day is like in the preschool. It is a good idea to visit and see how each individual is run and if this is the right program for your child.
